 September 1, 1715 – The “Sun King” (King Louis XIV of France) died. He had ruled since the age of five and was succeeded by his 5-year-old great-grandson Louis XV.
September 2, 1945 – President Harry Truman declared V-J Day (Victory over Japan Day) commemorating the formal Japanese surrender to the Allies aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.
On September 7, 1940 Germany begins its campaign of Blitzkrieg on London and its civilians. Nights after night, German soldiers dropped high explosives and fireballs on civilians in what happens to be the worst civilian tragedy of UK. There were major aerial raids (attacks in which more than 100 tonnes of high explosives were dropped) on 16 British cities. Over a period of 267 days (almost 37 weeks), London was attacked 71 times.
September 11, 2001 – The worst terrorist attack in U.S. history occurred as four large passenger jets were hijacked then crashed, killing nearly 3,000 people.

La Tomatina in Buñol, Spain – Aug. 30. Every year at the end of August, a small part of the Valencia region appears to go mad as people hurl more than 100 tons of tomatoes. There’s more to it than that of course but it’s said to be tons of fun. Tip: All participants should pack a few old clothes.
Braderie de Lille Flea Market in Lille, France – September 1– 2 Each year, the first weekend in September – the last before school starts – sees Europe’s biggest flea market set up shop in the streets of Lille. Whatever your shopping style, you’ll be sure to find something, as the market attracts everyone from jumble sellers to experienced antique dealers.
